ISKM 01 — Information Sciences

Jan 12, 2025

Information Sciences turned out to be one of the more intriguing parts of the semester for me. Initially, I had only a vague idea of what this field encompassed, and I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. However, the course content pleasantly surprised and deeply engaged me. The scope of information sciences is remarkably broad and intersects with many other areas, which was what captivated me the most—it explored reality and examined how our environment and the tools we use shape our actions and behaviors. Here information sciences connected with interaction design, allowing me to view the field from a broader perspective and better understand its relationships and evolution.

One particularly fascinating aspect was the exploration of concepts like information overload, the crisis of concentration, anti-information syndrome, and technosis. I had been interested in these topics for some time, but this course placed them in a much wider context.

In my view, this course would appeal to anyone interested in technology who also wants to understand its role and connections to the society we live in, as well as its position in shaping the future.

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I often couldn’t attend the lectures in person, which was disappointing because the discussions held during class were very engaging. On a related note, one thing that initially put me off about the course was a comment made by the lecturer at the beginning of the semester. He mentioned that the lectures and presentations would be packed with information and will feel overwhelming. In the context of a subject about information sciences, I found this somewhat counterproductive—shouldn’t we aim to make a course on this topic accessible and avoid overwhelming students with too much information?

That said, as the semester unfolded, the lectures proved to be genuinely interesting. While there was indeed a lot of information, it was presented in a clear and digestible manner, and the delivery kept me fully engaged in the subject matter. In hindsight, I see the initial statement about information overload as a bit unfortunate, as it could discourage some students right from the start, causing them to miss out on a truly valuable experience.

When preparing for the final exam, I found materials from previous students on Quizlet especially helpful, and I’m genuinely grateful for their contributions:
